The launch ceremony of the 6th Foreign Language Activity Month and the English Word Contest was successfully held

Language is a window and bridge between China and the world. In order to better serve the “double first-class” construction and international development of Dalian University of Technology, to create a good atmosphere for campus foreign language learning, and to improve the foreign language ability of our students, the School of Foreign Languages and the Youth League Committee jointly held the sixth Dalian University of Technology Foreign Language Activity Month. On the evening of May 15th, 2023, the launch ceremony and the English Word Contest were successfully held in the lecture hall on the fifth floor of the Student Cultural Center.
The event was presented by leaders of relevant departments of the university, including: Hou Qingmin, minister of the Student Work Department of the University Party Committee; Hu Fengyan, deputy minister of the Graduate Work Department of the Party Committee; Wang Yunhe, deputy secretary of the School Youth League Committee; Wu Shuo, deputy director of the Academic Affairs Office, and Zhang Helun, director of the Expert Section of the International Cooperation and Exchange Office.
Also, some leading teachers of the School of Foreign Languages attended the event, including: Chen Hongjun, dean of the School; Zhang Li, secretary of the Party Committee; Xv Mingying, deputy secretary of the Party Committee; Sun Chengzhi, vice dean of the School; Ding Man, vice dean of the Party Committee; Qin Zhiqiang, vice dean of the School and deputy secretary of the Party Committee.
At the beginning of the event, Professor Ding Man, vice dean of the School of Foreign Languages, explained the program for the sixth Foreign Language Activity Month for all in attendance. With the theme of “boosting internationalization, accelerating the first-class creation”, it was divided into two parts: “forging the foundation of language, telling Chinese stories well”, including an English Word Contest, Japanese drama「アナと雪の女王」and English dramaShalom-Shanghai,both of which would be presented to the whole university in early June; “creating a foreign language atmosphere, stimulating the vitality of youth”, including an English Speech Contest on “The Chinese Path to Modernization”, Foreign Language Dubbing Contest on “Changes” and a Foreign Language Calligraphy Contest on “Working Hard, Pursuing Dreams.” After carefully interpreting the rules and information for the Foreign Language Activity Month, Professor Ding Man stressed the importance of learning foreign languages to serve national strategy and help build China's foreign discourse system in the new era, and encouraged students to confidently tell Chinese stories in foreign languages.
Subsequently, the host announced the launch of the sixth Foreign Language Activity Month. This was followed by the start of the preliminary round of the English Word Contest, attracting 100 players from 15 faculties and schools to show their sound vocabulary.
After understanding the regulations of using the answering machine and testing the equipment, 100 students held the answering machine in the arena and answered the preliminary questions carefully within the specified time shown on the large screen. After the fierce competition of 120 questions in 4 categories, the 8 contestants with the highest scores successfully advanced to the final.
The final was divided into four categories: pronunciation, slang translation, misspelled words and word shorthand. Eight contestants competed on the same stage and used a buzzer to answer questions. The atmosphere was lively and the contestants were active. They fought using their reactions, knowledge and acumen. The questions flashing on the screen were a test of immediate response, and each quick response showcased the contestants' excellent knowledge. It was the practiced learning and knowledge accumulation off stage that allowed for their calmness and confidence on stage. All the contestants’ wonderful performances earned the applause of the guests and audience.
