The Appointment Ceremony for “Overseas Visiting Scholar” Professor Zheng Binghan

On May 22nd, 2023, the appointment ceremony for “overseas visiting scholar” was held by School of Foreign Languages, Dalian University of Technology (DUT). Professor Zheng Binghan, tenured professor from School of Modern Languages and Cultures, Durham University, supervisor of PhD students in translation and linguistic studies, and director in the Centre for Intercultural Mediation, was appointed as the “overseas visiting scholar” of our School. After the ceremony, professor Zheng Binghan presented a lecture on “cognitive translation/interpreting studies and their publications in international journals” for teachers and students of our School. The appointment ceremony was chaired by professor Chen Hongjun, Dean of the School of Foreign Languages, DUT. Teachers and students from our School attended the ceremony and lecture.

Before the appointment ceremony, professor Chen Hongjun presented an introduction to professor Zheng Binghan in terms of his academic background, research interests, etc. Subsequently, the letter of appointment was issued to professor Zheng Binghan by professor Chen Hongjun, on behalf of School of Foreign Languages, DUT. The project of DUT’s overseas visiting scholar concentrates on international prominent scholars, with an appointment term of three years. Within the term, professor Zheng Binghan will conduct academic exchanges regularly with teachers and students in our School, supervise postgraduate students in a cooperative manner and provide courses of relevant majors and research areas.

During the academic lecture “cognitive translation/interpreting studies and their publications in international journals”, professor Zheng Binghan started with several studies conducted in the last five years of his research group,cognitive translation & interpreting research group of Durham University. In particular, professor Zheng Binghan demonstrated their publications on international academic journals, and elaborated the ways to generate sound research in cognitive translation & interpreting studies. Subsequently, professor Zheng Binghan briefly introduced someoutstanding international academic journals on translation studies andprovided tips for publication, with discussions on the positioning of research articles on translation studies among a variety of international journals. Finally, teachers and students in the lecture communicated with professor Zheng Binghan regarding his lecture contents.

As an important academic activity, the appointment ceremony and academic lecture have established a platform for teachers and students of our School to communicate with renowned experts and scholars in the world. By holding the activity, teachers’ and students’ passion for exploring frontier translation studies have been inspired, which creates a desirable atmosphere for international academic exchanges.

Zheng Binghan, PhD, is the tenured professor from School of Modern Languages and Cultures, Durham University, supervisor of PhD students in translation and linguistic studies, and director in the Centre for Intercultural Mediation. He was conferred with the title of Honorary Fellowship of Chartered Institute of Linguists (HonFCIL). He is a member of UK Research and Innovation, and also held a By-fellowship at Churchill College of Cambridge University. Zheng Binghan was appointed as distinguished professor or visiting professor by a dozen of prominent universities, including Dalian University of Technology, Nankai University, Wuhan University of Technology, etc. His research interests involve process-oriented translation studies, cognitive translation/interpreting studies, translation & cognitive science and neuroscience, etc. He has published five monographs and edited books, published by Routledge, Cambridge University Press, Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press, etc., with over 50 research articles appearing in both domestic and international academic journals, such asBrain & Cognition,Journal of Pragmatics,Target,Babel,Perspectives,The Interpreter & Translator Trainer,Across Languages & Cultures,Translation & Interpreting Studies,LANS-TTS,Frontiers in Psychology,Foreign Language Teaching and Research,Journal of Foreign Languages,Foreign Languages in China, etc. Supported by the National Social Science Fund of China, he has been responsible for the project of “research on the type of translation pressure and the cognitive psychology of translation”. He was also invited as the guest editor of journals, includingTranslation & Interpreting Studies, and the editor for the special issue ofTranslation & Interpreting Studies. He is now the member of editorial board of many academic journals, includingPerspectives (SSCl, A&HCI),Frontiers in Psychology (SSCl),Journal of Translation Studies,Translation Quarterly,Foreign Languages and Literature, etc.
